After the brutal murder of their parents, sixteen-year-old Anne and her mute brother suffer great hardship as they travel through violent, plague-ridden fourteenth-century Europe. From her uncle she learns clockmaking, and after his death travels to a distant city to deliver the commissioned plans for a town clock.
