Toynbee Hall and Social Reform, 1880-1914

Synopsis
Toynbee Hall, founded in the slums of London's East End in 1884 by the Rev. Samuel Barnett, was the first settlement house established in England or America and remains one of the best known. This book traces the history of the Toynbee Hall ethos of community. Meacham focuses first on the roots of the ethos in Oxford Idealism. He then analyzes the ethos of Toynbee Hall during its first 25 years. By 1900 the philosophical assumptions of the hall were being challenged by socialists and centralists who argued for greater intervention by the state to solve social problems.
